3 to 5 MMT of Brazil beans moved yesterday afternoon

 Farmers in Brazil rushed to sell soybeans at a “once in a decade” pace as a deepening political crisis sent the nation’s currency tumbling.

“Farmers ran to take advantage of the currency plunge,” Vitor Minella, who works at Meneguetti, a brokerage, said Thursday in telephone interview from Campo Verde, a municipality in Mato Grosso.

An estimated 2 million metric tons of soybeans and corn were sold on Thursday in Brazil, according to two people who were directly involved in some of the deals and who asked not to be named because the information isn’t public. A normal day’s volume would be about 200,000 tons, and very busy days usually are close to 1.5 million, one of the people said.

It’s a question that matters more than most in farming – what’s your breakeven cost of production? According to a March 2017 Farm Journal Media survey of more than 500 farmers, the overall mean average cost of corn production this year is $3.69 per acre.

A total of 535 farmers responded to the survey, offering breakeven corn prices ranging between $1.90 up to $5.50 per bushel. Two-thirds of the answers provided were below $4 per bushel.
